For 7 of their vessels Arklow Shipping was looking for a cost-efficient satellite communication solution, giving them unlimited internet access to improve their operational efficiency and enable their crew to stay in touch with friends and relatives whilst at sea.
The solution
As a solution we proposed our newest KA-band VSAT technology based on a 60 cm antenna system and Telenor Thor 7 satellite service. The JUE-60KA provides regional coverage with a favorable look angle over the main European shipping lanes and utilizes relatively small spot beams, which provide unprecedented high-power performance for maritime applications. The complete system includes a 4G solution, remote management capabilities and intelligent switching between VSAT and 4G
Customer profile
Arklow Shipping, established in 1966, is a leader within Europe in the dry bulk trade, with chartering teams based in Arklow and Rotterdam. Arklow Shipping has a long-term relationship with many of Europe's multinational trading groups and is continually updating and enlarging its fleet to meet customer requirements. The company has a fleet of modern single deck, box hold and container fitted vessels ideally suited for the carriage of project cargoes, grain, generals and bulk commodities including those classified under IMO regulations. Arklow Shipping currently operates a modern fleet of about 55 ships in sizes ranging from 4,200 – 35,000 tonnes.
Success
Arklow was the first shipowner to implement the new JRC JUE-60KA VSAT system. The complete systems were pre-configured, assembled and tested, which resulted in a single day installation on board of the seven vessels. “The whole process went very smoothly and the collaboration with Alphatron Marine was pleasant. Masters on board the vessels are satisfied, the speed is very good compared to other VSAT systems in use. And because installation was completed in a single day during cargo operation, the ship was able to sail on time according to schedule”, tells Leen Warnaar, Technical Director of Arklow Shipping Nederland BV. “Alphatron Marine stands for quality with a human touch!”
