Our services

The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) is a worldwide emergency and safety system for shipping at sea. According to the GMDSS, a ship that complies with these requirements must be able to contact a shore station, receive weather reports and maintain ship-to-ship communications, at any time and from any location. GMDSS is currently mandatory for commercial shipping, but for safety reasons, it is also strongly recommended for pleasure craft.

The GMDSS requirements depend on the sea area in which your vessel operates. If you operate up to approximately 20 to 30 nautical miles from the coast, this falls within Area A1, where a standard VHF installation with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) is sufficient (for example, JHS-800S). This allows you to contact the coastguard, establish and maintain contact with other vessels, and receive weather reports. Beyond Area A1, up to approximately 150–180 nautical miles from the coast, is Area A2, which is within the range of an MF coast station. Area A3 covers the sea area beyond A1 and A2 but within the coverage of a Recognized Mobile Satellite Service (for example, Inmarsat or approved geostationary/non-geostationary satellite systems such as Iridium), roughly corresponding to the area between 70° north latitude and 70° south latitude. This coverage is effectively worldwide, with the exception of areas near the North and South Poles. Area A4 refers to the remaining sea areas outside A1, A2 and A3. This essentially covers the polar regions (north and south of approximately 70°–75° latitude), where geostationary satellite coverage does not reach.

  2. Cargo ships between 300 and 500 GT: 1 set. Cargo ships of 500 GT and above and passenger ships: 2 sets.
  3. Cargo ships between 300 and 500 GT: 2 sets. Cargo ships of 500 GT and above and passenger ships: 3 sets.
  4. Ships in sea area A3 may choose between duplication with a complete MF/HF transceiver or an SES, where an RMSS is provided with a coverage area equal to or greater than that of the primary RMSS.
  5. A single MF/HF radio installation may be accepted as either the primary MF radio installation or as a duplicated MF/HF radio installation, as specified in the latest IMO circular relating to GMDSS requirements

SOLAS is regarded as the most important international treaty concerning the safety of seagoing vessels. The main objective of the SOLAS Convention is to specify minimum standards for the construction, equipment, and operation of ships to ensure safety on board.
